Photo Friday: Abandoned

Abandoned shack at Silver Ledge Farm, at the crossroads, Dutchess County, NY

p.s. That's a black crow flying...not dirt on the lens!

This picture reminded me so much of a barn we used to drive by every time we went home to Scott's folks' house in Michigan. It was an old, dilapidated, falling down structure, set in the midst of a beautifully green, smooth soybean field. In the winter, it would be stark against the smooth snow. I just loved it, and always thought I'd stop and take a picture of it. In my head, I christened it "favorite barn".

Then one day we were driving and passed the field. It had completely fallen down! I was so disappointed that I had never gotten round to taking a picture of it standing. They eventually cleared away all the boards, but you can still see the forgotten foundation in the field, if the soybeans aren't too high.

Lesson learned. Always carry a camera, and if you see a deserving scene, take a picture.

That is precisely why I took this picture! In just the past year, the roof has caved in slightly and it looks like it's about ready to completely fall! Had to pull off of a major interstate onto a grassy curb to get it, but it was worth it...not because it's a particularly interesting shot, just because I know I have it.
